Perumal & Shiva Rockcut Temple, Malayadipatti

Perumal and Shiva Rock-cut Temple at Malayadipatti in Pudukkottai District is an important heritage site featuring two ancient cave temples dedicated to Lord Vishnu and Lord Shiva, both carved into the same natural rock formation. The site is also known as Tiruvalattur Malai. The Shiva cave is the older of the two and displays features associated with the Mahendra-style rock-cut architecture, including massive stone pillars and sculptural panels depicting deities such as Ganesha, Virabhadra, Shiva, Vishnu, and the Saptamatrikas. The Vishnu cave, popularly associated with Pallikonda Perumal, contains a remarkable reclining image of Vishnu on Adisesha, along with other sculptural representations and traces of historic artistic traditions. The Archaeological Survey of India lists the Rock-cut Siva Temple and Vishnu Temple at Malayadipatti among the protected monuments of Pudukkottai District. The temples are significant examples of the region’s early rock-cut architecture, religious heritage, and artistic traditions and are an important destination for visitors interested in history, archaeology, and temple architecture.
